The Bentley R-Type Continental was introduced to the public in 1952 as the successor of the Mark VI and quickly became known as the flying carpet, since he was the fastest four door saloon of its time. The R-Type was developed as a fast touring car. The R-Type is the first Bentley car ever that was named Continental, which stands for cars that were sold to continental Europe. In order to save weight Aluminum was used for the steel tube frame and the design was optimized in the wind channel. This resulted in the fact that the R-Type became the most expensive production car in the World. The R-Type was built for exporting, but many units remained in England. As a result they were seen as the optimism of the English in the 1950s. Design wise the rear window was way too small and appeared to be a step back into pre war development. The cockpit was luxuriously equipped and designed and had extravagant elegancy. The first units had the gear shift on the right hand side. The engine is 4.5 litre straight six engine. In May of 1954 a 4.8 litre version was introduced. The gear shift was a full synchronised four speed manual or as an option an automatic gear shift. In the front the Bentley had brake discs and in the rear drum breaks. The Continental achieved a top speed of 188 km/h and the acceleration from 0 – 100 km/h took about 14 seconds. The average fuel consumption was 14.5 litre on average.
